Astrology: the study of how planetary movements and astronomical data could influence people, events, environments. For some it’s a symbolic and deeply spiritual practice, for others it’s more science bases and psychological, for me it’s a language. With its roots deeply lost (read erased, appropriated and gentrified) in history, with many different theories of where or whom used it first and in which ways, the study of astronomical influence has been fascinating large part of the world cultures for long time. Our Ancestor integrated astrology in their everyday life, observing and syncing their experience to the rhythm of nature, long before the practice had a name or a shared structure. One of the first forms of social analysis, via astrological pattern, communities where able to trace the recurrence of events and prepare rituals or social gatherings/necessities in accordance. It’s a known historical fact that many courts and kings had astrologers as close advisers. My first memory of astrology is in my Grandparents garden, learning how different plants grow better under certain aspects or planetary affection. Interestingly a lot of people across different societies seem to know or have heard of Astrology and therefore it makes its language widely known. Whether is a horoscope on a magazine, the rhythmic ritual of the seasons or a funny meme (n. jokes) account on social media, Astrology has officially become pop culture.
How does Astrology work? It depends on the astrologer but as a general foundation, Western Astrology (also known as Tropical astrology) is the system used in Europe, North America and invaded Australia. The calculation of the astronomical movements starts at the beginning of the season, rather than at the positioning of the stars/constellations. It sets the beginning of the calculation at the mark of the Sun entering 0’ Aries at the Spring Equinox, with the beginning of the year set at the New Moon in Aries soon after, when the two main Luminaries meet. The main application of Western (Tropical because of the Solstice astronomical alignment to the Constellations of Cancer+Capricorn) Astrology is the natal chart. This is a snapshot calculation of planetary positions and aspects based on one individual’s time, place and date of birth. It’s a visual representation that would allow astrologers to understand one’s native energies, underlying patterns or social behaviours. Each astrologer tends to specialise and each reading can focus on different areas of life like love, career or development. It can also be used a holistic diagnostic for underlying embodied energy conflicts or blocks. Spiritually it can be used a tool to communicate, trace connections to spirit guides or Ancestors.
